vancouver general hospital

Hospitals/Clinics | UBC Neurology (1)

Vancouver General Hospital (VGH) is the largest hospital in the province (and the second largest hospital in Canada) and provides specialty and tertiary services to residents of Vancouver and throughout the province. This facility is also a teaching hospital affiliated with the University of British Columbia College of Medicine, housing teaching facilities for medical students and 500 graduate students. VGH is also home to one of Canada's largest research institutes.

VGH is one of two accredited Level 1 trauma centers in BC and one of the premier referral centers in the province. This hospital is known for its exceptional care and innovative treatments that provide the best possible care to patients in need of medical assistance and care.

A very large percentage of all stroke patients who present with VGH or are referred for treatment are now admitted to the neurology department for acute care in the first 5-7 days of post-stroke treatment. From there, the stroke pathway includes transfer to the UBCH subacute stroke unit before proceeding to appropriate rehabilitation facilities or home. This has resulted in an increase in the number of stroke patients treated in the neurology department, with a decrease in the number of patients requiring longer stays in the unit.
